House Training Your New Pup/Dog
Puppy pads and newspaper teach a puppy to pee in one designated spot. That spot happens to be in your house.
This is not what you want to teach. Many dogs after you think they are trained and you take the paper or pad away, will still pee in that spot.
That spot is in the house!! The puppy never learned to to outside to do it's business.

Puppy Pads & Newspaper
The whole point is to make the dog want to pee in that designated spot and you take the signal of the pup going to the pad and take him/her out before he/she ever does any business in the house.
(I still do not recommend this method, puppies are hard to predict, they could just want to check the pad out or rip it up, but didn't get that far before you took him out. The puppy pad or newspaper is still sending the wrong message to the pup.)

House Training
- Feed and water on a schedule (dogs have to do their business a short time after eating & drinking)
- Do not leave food down all the time. (feed 2 or 3 times a day and then drop it down as the pup gets older. Some adult dogs prefer to only eat once a day)
- Take the puppy out after eating and drinking and play with him until he does his business.
- When he does it outside give him praise and a high value treat (meat or cheese) reserve this treat only for training. This is the only time he gets to taste it.

- If he has accidents in the house, do not say anything to him, ignore him and clean it up. You do not want to give negative attention.
- Crate him if you are not directly watching him or playing with him. This might seem harsh but it is for a short time.
Every accident he has in the house will be a set back in training, because dogs are habit forming animals.

My pups use to look for the treat every time they went out side and would stop peeing half way just to get the treat and then pee again and want another treat.
Little stinkers will try to work it to their advantage. I started to withhold the treat until they were completely done.

After the dog has mastered "take it" & "leave it" with a treat you can move on to toys.
1. Put the dog in a sit stay. Put the dog on a leash for better control.
2. Roll the ball in front of the dog & re-enforce the "stay" and alternate with "leave it" to relate the words.
3. Use the leash if you have to, so the dog doesn't run off to get the ball. If the dog stands up, start again.
4. If the dog sits & stays keep him there for the count of 5 and then give him the "take it" command when he goes to get it. When the dog takes it praise him and tell him he's a good boy.

- As the dog gets better at both the food & toy versions of "leave it" & "take it" lengthen the time the dog has to wait. Don't wait too long, it is better not to let the dog fail.
- When the dog is good with the commands roll or throw the ball and tell him "take it" and when he gets close to it call him off with "leave it" and call him back to you. Give him treats and praise when he does.

Once the dog knows the commands:
- Use the "take it" command before your dog eats its dinner every night and use "leave it" when ever the dog has something you don't want him to have.
- You can use the commands and get your dog to get your slippers and bring them to you and then use the leave it command to put them down. LOL

This has worked well for me, thought it may help someone else.

Steps: To teach "leave it" & "take it"
1. Start with a small treat. This is something the dog wants.
2. Make the dog sit & then into a down position. Give the "stay" command.
3. Place the treat about 30cm from the dogs face, re-enforce the "stay"command if he looks like he wants to take it. Use word association, alternate "stay" & "leave it". If the dog knows "stay", "leave it" is the same but used in a different way. If he attempts to take it cover it with your hand and pick it up and start again.
4. Only wait to the count of 5 at first and give the command "take it", let the dog take the treat and praise & tell him good boy.

- The dog will learn fast, if he leaves it, he will get the treat and if he tries to take it he will loose it.
