Take It & Leave It ~ Control Games
After the dog has mastered "take it" & "leave it" with a treat you can move on to toys.
1. Put the dog in a sit stay. Put the dog on a leash for better control.
2. Roll the ball in front of the dog & re-enforce the "stay" and alternate with "leave it" to relate the words.
3. Use the leash if you have to, so the dog doesn't run off to get the ball. If the dog stands up, start again.
4. If the dog sits & stays keep him there for the count of 5 and then give him the "take it" command when he goes to get it. When the dog takes it praise him and tell him he's a good boy.

- As the dog gets better at both the food & toy versions of "leave it" & "take it" lengthen the time the dog has to wait. Don't wait too long, it is better not to let the dog fail.
- When the dog is good with the commands roll or throw the ball and tell him "take it" and when he gets close to it call him off with "leave it" and call him back to you. Give him treats and praise when he does.

Once the dog knows the commands:
- Use the "take it" command before your dog eats its dinner every night and use "leave it" when ever the dog has something you don't want him to have.
- You can use the commands and get your dog to get your slippers and bring them to you and then use the leave it command to put them down. LOL
